Saint Mary's Press, Winona, Minnesota
Title: Curriculum Development Editor
Coordinates with: freelance editors and writers, teachers, campus ministers, teenagers, editors in the high school workgroup, other editors in the development department, development staff, and project teams
Summary of position: Evaluate customer input, research content, recruit potential authors, supervise writing, edit curriculum materials for adolescents that are faithful to the teaching of the Catholic Church and that respond to the needs of teenagers and teachers in Catholic high schools and parishes
Skills: The preferred candidate would have three to five years high school teaching experience and would be knowledgeable about current teaching methods, educational trends, and the teachings of the Catholic Church. An advanced degree in religious education, theology or pastoral ministry is required; in addition, a degree in education is desirable.
Specific Operating Responsibilities:
Work with the editorial staff to fill the publishing plan openings with appropriate resources.
- Work with other editors, marketing representatives, and design representatives in assessing customer needs, both spoken and unspoken.
- Collaborate with writers to produce initial concepts and outlines for curriculum materials, and to shape the content, structure, and style of the materials.
- Recruit and train writers.

- Work with writers to produce acceptable, edited manuscripts.
- Give input to designer and photo acquisitions coordinator on visual needs of a project.
- Work as a project team member to ensure that projects are initiated and carried out according to schedule by means of necessary meetings and forms, and by ensuring that various tasks are completed on time.
- Meet publishing plan deadlines.
- Assess the success or failure of previous innovations and listen to customers’ experience of current products.
- Support fellow editors in various ways.
- Meet with the development department and attend company-wide meetings to share wisdom, grow professionally, and stay aware of procedural changes in other departments.
- Assist with marketing and sales efforts through presence at conferences and contribution to customer communication such catalogs, e-news, and responding to customer comments.
Tasks Related to Staying Current in the Field:
Grow in understanding of the Lasallian charism of Saint Mary’s Press
- Participate in department-wide study and conversation related to the theological, pedagogical, and pastoral dimensions of the work of Saint Mary’s Press.
- Actively maintain contact with teachers, experts, and professional organizations related to our catechetical and educational work.
- Actively stay in touch with young people, youth workers and youth culture.
- Attend regional or national conferences, and participate in continuing education related to Catholic education, educational methods, and the world of editing and publishing.
- Regularly review appropriate periodicals and literature to stay current on Catholic education at the national level, news and trends in education, and other material relevant to our work
